Program Outlines

Gifted Education

Agile programs that change based on students’ strengths and interests.

Combined Year 7 and Year 8 Program

Our Gifted Education program provides students displaying unique abilities, gifts and talents with specially designed opportunities to expand on these attributes and to reach their potential. The program runs before school two mornings a week and offers students opportunities engage in special projects, competitions and events.

During Year 7 and Year 8, students are enriched and extended through a series of learning experiences designed to support and develop students’ skills in ideation, problem solving, creative and critical thinking, textual analysis, research, ethics, and collaboration. Individual interests are explored and opportunities for exposure to a wider range of ideas and cultures are encouraged.

In 2025, students are participating in:

  • the Future Anything Activate Program, where students act as changemakers to design an innovative solution to a global problem
  • Tournament of Minds, where students work in groups on a discipline of their choice to complete a long-term challenge and have the opportunity to compete statewide
  • Interdisciplinary Challenge where students build upon their Tournament of Minds learnings and expand their passion projects beyond a single discipline to integrate multiple subject areas

Towards the end of the academic year, students will present their work to fellow students, staff and their families at the Big Ideas Showcase, before transitioning into the Year 9 program.

Students are selected based on a range of general ability testing data such as AGAT, PAT and NAPLAN testing; consultation with classroom teachers and expressions of interest from students and parents.

Year 9 Elective

In Year 9, students complete a combination of semester-length and/or year-length electives in addition to their core subjects. The Year 9 Gifted Education Program is offered as a year-long elective, and students are invited to participate as one of their elective choices.

The course focuses on challenging and extending students to support and develop their full potential, over 2 classes per week. Students explore a range of disciplines with project-based learning from both a STEM and Ethical focus. Students collaborate with like-minded peers to design and develop their ideas and showcase these at the school level.

There is also the opportunity for students to represent the College in a range of renowned academic competitions such as the da Vinci Decathlon and the Ethics Olympiad. The program is designed to support highly able students to discover their academic passions and talents, building confidence as self-advocates for their learning.

In 2025 students are participating in:

  • the Australian STEM Video Game Challenge – a competition for students to design their own original video game
  • Ethics Olympiad, where students work with ethical case studies and learn how to engage in ethical discourse in the seminar setting, with the opportunity to compete at the State level.

Year 10 Elective

In Year 10 Gifted Education is again offered as a year-long elective, with 3 classes per week. Students participating in the elective will compliment it with another year-long elective from the learning area of their choice.

The elective focuses on challenging and enriching students’ academic experience to support and develop their full potential. Students in the program have the opportunity to showcase their talents at both the school and state level through project showcases and competitions such as the da Vinci Decathlon.

In Semester 2 students have an esteemed opportunity for acceleration when they apply for the Curtin Rising Scholar Program (RSP). The RSP offers students an immersive tertiary learning experience at Curtin University while still in high school, allowing them to earn University credit.

Year 11 and Year 12

There are no Gifted Education programs in Year 11 and Year 12 – timetables are filled with courses specific to the Pathway/s students have chosen to study, based on their desired post-school destination.
